September to Welcome Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh

The Cambodian government has announced the commencement of Techo International Airport in September 2025, to replace the Phnom Penh International Airport.

At the heart of the capital, Phnom Penh International Airport serves as Cambodia’s second largest airport and main international gateway. The current largest airport is Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport.

The Progress on Techo International Airport

Located about 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, stretching across Kandal and Takeo provinces is the 2,600-hectare facility under construction to become a 4F-Class airport capable of handling the world’s largest aircrafts.

With the first phase of Techo International Airport (TIA) almost 96% complete as of mid-May, the remaining work was said to involve decorating, installing signs and the like. While operations were set to begin on June 10, the deadline has been pushed back after an expert assessment showed unfinished works. The government is ensuring airport function and safety.

In a statement last Friday, the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) announced the official inauguration ceremony to be held on October 20, 2025. The first phase will give TIA the capacity to handle over 15 million passengers annually, surpassing Phnom Penh International Airport’s limit of 5 million people.

The Fate of Phnom Penh International Airport

Formerly called Pochentong Airport, Phnom Penh International Airport saw much change over the course of Cambodia’s history. First opened in January 1959, it went from being a construction of the Japanese occupation to a renovated airport under His Majesty King Father Norodom Sihanouk, and now a modern hub connecting Cambodia to the world. The site has been a historical and significant base in the country.

On May 16, Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that Pochentong Airport would be preserved to honor the nation's history and memory. With the transfer of oversight to the SSCA, he ensured that any future use of Pochentong Airport is sustainable and benefits the people.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Manet dismisses claims on the sale of the existing airport, stating that the government will retain full legal ownership of the land and infrastructure, but will transform the facility to further benefit the citizens of Phnom Penh and beyond.
